Ok you guys and gals probably remember be announcing that i had me a female betta that was acting more male (blowing bubble nests ect) than female. So i asked what you thought and no one really knew I tried putting HER next to rainbow to see if any eggs would appear NOPE, just alot of flaring between the two. SO this has been bugging me for ages but today we saw another little girl betta (definatly a girl) and put her where our other supposed female could see well SHE is a HE ;D The performance was outstanding, flare and then bum wiggle ROFL i was just about wetting myself laughing especially at the thought that he had been named Mrs Rainbow (how embarrasing for him). SO i guess i need to come up with another name now LOL. So the problem has been solved, the almost funner thing is we only paid female price for him ($3.50 Australian) instead of $9.00. No wonder he was being picked on in with all those true girls (about 15 of them) and that why we picked that "female" so i guess the joke is on us Just thought you would all get a laugh out of this

NO NO NO, dont go by that, my female flares like crazy at my males, same bum wiggling etc. Mine as well blew a bubble nest, and i checked, she has a little white dot, so she is definatly a girl. I highly doubt yours is a male, mine, even next to the male for a month didnt get any eggs. I see the white dot on your pic too, males do not have one, also, she is more robust in the stomach region which means she is filled with eggs. They will eventually after about a month unfill with eggs by releasing them if there is no male to breed with. You definatly have a male fishfriend. Also short finned males, have different shaped fins from my experience, cause i have seen short finned males, and they had no egg spot, and had way different finnage..females in general are more robust than males, even when they are unfilled with eggs

Rissa does your females flare at each other and then one do the bum dance? The famale that i got today is very submissive but the other questionable one has never been submissive, even is really agressive when i am hand feeding. I have been told that some males can display the white dot, a few people on the australian betta forums told me not to use this solely as an example of only females

MALES DO NOT GET EGG SPOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! completly wrong, their would be no use for a male to have a white spot. I dont have two females, but when i put her near any of the males, she flares AND does the bum dance, theres always super aggressive females who act just like males, I KNOW MINE DOES! thats why im afraid to breed her, shed beat up my male, she can definatly hold her own, for sure

Yeah, I seen a nice female flare before and she had a bubble nest built, plus she had the white spot but was fat around the belly so that was a give away. I would wait a few more weeks and feed her/him the right foods and wait and see what happens

do you plan to breed it? because if you don't, does it really matter what gender he/she is?

oh, and also, it take up to 2-3 months to fill with eggs, but really primed ones take only a few weeks

Be careful if you Do breed them, there will be Lots of eggs, and all the fry will need to be housed properly, and then you will have to separate the males and the females or chaos will be let loose! I would wait as the others are trying to say, maybe its a short finned male

The intention when i bought her/him was to breed eventually once we had enough jars, and a LFS that would take them ;D but as it is at the moment we are trying to get some stuff done so we can do our own fish shop and sell cheaper priced items to the public and educate them on the right ways to look after fish especially Bettas so just maybe if this venture takes off i will be able to sell them in my own shop and know that they are good quality

i guarantee its a female. no worries there. im 14 and beg my parents everyday to start a pet store, because just like your goal, i wanna sell healthy fish and make sure they are looked after properly in and out of my care. the reason LFSs sell their bettas in cups is the only way thats actuallly possible because each petstore sells about 150+ a week, they cant afford to house them any different that would be cost efficient. THats why they do daily w*cs

Most do water changes, Some of them neglect a few cups, like my LFS they neglected a cup because a customer came in and a bunch after him, so I pointed it out and they did a water change. Oh yeah, I'm gonna get some fish food and plants tomorrow! ;D
