My experience of cycling is i bought 4 platies, and put them in the new tank, at first they acted a bit listless, but they perked right up. The also bred in my tank. 2 weeks after, i brought all but one of the platies back, and got more fish after 2 weeks. I added fish slowly, but i have never tried fishless cycles.

I've used both methods, fish and fishless.
It is all preferences. Fishless cycle...less work. Fish cycle more work and can be cruel (it is how a person sees it).
When I have a pure new tank (never been used), I use fish less cycle. I used fish to cycle the 2 used tanks I got with used filter...used gravel. It speeds up a lot.
