Common Name: Tang - Blue Other Common Names: Hippo Tang Scientific Name: Paracanthurus hepatus Origin: Indo-Pacific
Description: The Blue Tang has one of the most widely recognized color patterns of any fish. Especially since the Hit Movie "finding Nemo" and Dory (the Blue Hippo tang)
Also known as the "Hippo" Tang, this fish has a cool rich blue with a distinctive black stripe and yellow tail. Like all tang it is a strict herbivore but will eat some flake food. This fish is found in the pet trade in a wide range of sizes; from very small, approximately one inch, to an impressive ten inches in total length. This fish is generally quite hardy and a hobbyist can easily get a good indication of the fish's health by observing the body weight of the fish. Blue Tang that are thin should be avoided. It is also important to note that this fish can be quite shy and aloof. For this reason it will often hide for quite awhile when introduced to a new aquarium. It is not unusual for this fish to lie on its side when chased or when placed into a bag in a pet store. This does not indicate poor health, rather it is simply normal behavior for this fish.
Other Information: There are two different Blue Tangs, One In the Carribean Ocean and the other in the Indian ocean/ Pacific (indo pacific) It is not related to the other Blue tang found in the Carribean.
