ok i have the heater being delivered tonight in about 3 more hours,so i know to bring the temp up slowly...the tank is 5 gallons(new)so last water change was yesterday(full)i don't know the ph or amonia(but i suspect the amonia would be fine)Been treating him for ick for 7 days..all signs were gone until this morning...about 8 or 9 white dots mostly on his tail that i can see...now the problem is i used the flashlight and it looks like about 3 holes in the bottom of his tail with some brown discoloration.I told the lady at the pet shop i wanted maracide but she didn't have it so she's sending a fungacide(not melafix..i already have that but have not used it)I'm scared to death it's velvet..he's stillswimming and flaring but he looks alittle lethargic to me...been sitting on bottom abit...could this just be a fungus? He also seems a little off balance once in awhile. There is one scale up by his gill where he flares that is loose(very small but there)The brown discoloration doesn't look golden to me (which they write is velvet)and there are none of those white whisps hanging from him that the red betta had when he died.he did eat well once today but i haven't fed him tonight yet.Sorry i forgot to get the ph tester but i'll get that next.Plz help...i really don't want to lose him...so keep in mind the heater will be here in a few hours and i have ick meds, melafix, and some kind of fungacide(that wil get here when the heater does)to work with...thankyou so much

ok from what i was reading in the illness section on the bettaobsession i don't think it's velvet...the flashlight isn't showing anything that looks like gold dust.he doesn't have those white whisps so i don't think it's fungus.he doesn't have red bloody marks so i don't think it's true fungus....it reads alot like finrot. Now what would i be using for that ...the melafix or should i use this fungacide that's being delivered tonight? Also do i continue to use the ick meds while i'm treating him for something else?i take it the ick meds cycle has started all over again so i should treat him for ten days after it disapears every other day?and do i have to take water out to put new medicine in?thankyou

Do you have a cycled tank that you can put the betta in? If its not cycled the stress will get worst, anyways. The melafix in small doses could help but the fungacide is better since its stronger, melafix is a mild med. I wouldn't do full water changes, maybe a 50%, make, just make sure he is eating correctly and if he isn't tell us. After the heater arrives slowly raise the temp, to 80 degrees, then to 82 for the ich, if the meds say you can use the Ich medicine then use them together.

I believe your getting a reoccurence of ich, the heat will help, and hes getting a secondary fin rot problem. 2 of mine are healing from fin rot now, i have always had luck with melafix. Use half the recommended dose, and treat until the fin rot is healed. It healed the holes on my bettas fins in 4 days, and healed the brown color in 10 days. Bettamax is also reccommended by me. Try melafix, it is mild, and its easier on bettas the strong meds, belive me, i tried.

you know what's really confusing me is the water thing...do i take out 20 percent every time i put the ick meds in and or the melafix or do i just put them in with no water changes? And i should do a 50 percent what...2 a week?See you guys shouldn't of let newbies in ...i,m goin to drive you all nuts with questions...lol

that ok bout the questions its a good thing your asking them ;D
once you put the meds in genrally they are effective for 24 hours and doing a water change right after the meds is useless, do about 50% water change 24 hours after the med is put in then make sure the freshwater is the same temp so it isn't stressfull and then add the meds according to the bottle again.

I never do water changes when i treat the tank with melafix, but thats what i do. I would add it, than do every other day weater changes till the treatment is finished.
